BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Nace en Bera, el 3 de abril de 1893, en el caserío Agaramontea del barrio de Illekueta. Desde la niñez siente cierta atracción por las letras y la vida religiosa, que deja a un lado a consecuencia de provocar un incendio en el caserío Garrenea mientras juega a oficiar misa con su hermana ciega. Cursa sus estudios en el colegio de los Padres Escolapios y tiene un primer contacto con el mundo musical, pero debido al cambio prematuro de su voz, no es aceptado en el coro parroquial.
Hacia los catorce años decide emigrar a Argentina, donde tiene familiares. Situado en Buenos Aires, empieza a trabajar en una ferretería, al mismo tiempo que escribe para La Euskaria, un periódico de la diáspora vasca. Se aficiona a la ópera y comienza a frecuentar teatros de aquella ciudad. Haciéndose escuchar por los cantantes Florencio Constantino y Titta Ruffo, le recomiendan ir a Italia a estudiar canto. Tras presentarse al Concurso Cleofonte Campanini y obtener el tercer puesto, después de los famosos tenores Beniamino Gigli y Francesco Merli, ingresa en el Conservatorio de Parma, pero sus estudios se interrumpen a consecuencia del comienzo de la I Guerra Mundial y regresa a Bera. Empieza a escribir en el semanario El Bidasoa y a colaborar con el Orfeón Pamplonés. Aconsejado por Ricardo Baroja (hermano de don Pío), consigue una pensión de la Diputación de Navarra para continuar sus estudios de canto con el maestro Luis Iribarne en Madrid. Allí debuta en el Gran Teatro con Sansón y Dalila en 1919 y al año siguiente estrena en Bilbao la ópera vasca Amaya, de Jesús Guridi. Unos meses más tarde participa con la compañía Llácer-Casali en una gira por capitales de España y Portugal, cantando las óperas La Walkyria y Parsifal, del compositor alemán Richard Wagner.
A finales de 1921 debuta en el Teatro San Carlo de Nápoles con La Walkyria y desde entonces se convierte en el más especializado, el mejor pagado y más afamado tenor wagneriano de los años 20 y 30 en Italia, cuando este repertorio se cantaba entonces en italiano en los países latinos.
Es contratado por los más importantes teatros de aquel país: Regio de Parma, Costanzi de Roma, L’Arena de Verona, Comunale de Bolonia, Regio de Turín, etc… y especialmente por La Scala de Milán, cantando allí desde 1925 y durante 7 temporadas los principales papeles de los héroes wagnerianos, Erik, Sigmund, Sigfrido y Parsifal, bajo la batuta de prestigiosos directores de orquesta como Héctor Panizza, Sigfried Wagner (hijo del compositor), Arturo Toscanini, Victor de Sabata, etc…
Actúa también durante las temporadas 1925 y 1930 en el Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires: L´Amore dei tre Re, Tabaré, Fedra, Khovanshchina, Lo Straniero, Boris Godunov, y especialmente Amaya que, en compañía del compositor, entusiasma a la colonia vasca.
En el verano de 1928 viaja por varias ciudades alemanas y asiste al Festival de Bayreuth invitado por Siegfried Wagner, que le aconseja estudiar las obras de su padre en alemán.
Comenzada la Guerra Civil, al enterarse del bombardeo de Gernika en abril de 1937, impresionado y afectado en lo más profundo de su patriotismo vasco, abandona Italia (país que colabora con los sublevados) y su carrera artística para siempre, exiliándose en San Juan de Luz, junto a otros refugiados vascos que escapan de la persecución franquista. Desde ahora se dedicará a su verdadera vocación: la literatura.
Durante esos años escribe las biografías de los personajes labortanos Pedro Garat, el Orfeo de Francia y Domingo Garat, el defensor del Biltzar, que serán publicadas por la editorial Ekin de Buenos Aires en 1948 y 1951 respectivamente.
En mayo de 1940, poco antes de la invasión de Francia por el Ejército nazi, es detenido por las autoridades francesas y recluido junto con otros exilados vascos en el Campo de Concentración de Gurs (Bearn), de donde es liberado al cabo de un mes, tras malvivir en condiciones infrahumanas.
Terminada la II Guerra Mundial se incorpora y refunda en 1948 la revista cultural de carácter humanista Gernika, una de las más interesantes experiencias editoriales del exilio en el campo del pensamiento y de la defensa de los valores espirituales de pueblo vasco, y de la cual será redactor, principal impulsor y soporte financiero hasta su desaparición en 1953 en Argentina, país al que se exilia en 1951.
Además de impartir conferencias, programas de radio, etc…, desde 1957 comienza a escribir decenas de artículos para el periódico La Prensa de Buenos Aires, la mayoría de los cuales serán recopilados más tarde en forma de libro: Retablo Vasco (1959), Unamuno a orillas del Bidasoa y otros ensayos (1964), Los poetas y el País Vasco (1969), y El teatro por dentro (1971). Se trata en su mayoría de temas relacionados con la música (en algunos cuenta amenas anécdotas de su vida artística anterior) y la literatura, vinculados en muchas ocasiones con el País Vasco.
Regresa a Euskal Herria en 1964, fijando su residencia en San Sebastián. Nombrado Socio de Mérito del Ateneo Guipuzcoano y Supernumerario de la Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País se dedica a dar conferencias y a colaborar con sus artículos en El Diario Vasco, hasta su muerte, que tuvo lugar el 16 de marzo de 1976.

El fondo fue entregado al Archivo Real y General de Navarra para su custodia por la familia del tenor en 2018, para que se integrara entre los fondos del Archivo de la Música y las Artes Escénicas de Navarra.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ACCESS AND REPRODUCTION
The documentation is accessible to the public in person at the facilities of the Royal and General Archive of Navarre.
Consultation and reproduction are subject to the provisions of Resolution 373/2013 of 9 December, of the General Director of Culture - Institución Príncipe de Viana, approving the Internal Rules for Access, Consultation and Reproduction of Documents from the Archivo Real y General de Navarra.
The reproduction of works that are not in the public domain shall only be possible when this is for the private use of the person making the request and solely for research purposes, in accordance with the provisions of Royal Legislative Decree 1/1996 of 12 April approving the Revised Text of the Intellectual Property Law, regularising, clarifying and harmonising the legal provisions in force on the matter.
Article 10. Original Titles and Works.
1. All original literary, artistic and scientific creations expressed by any means or media, tangible or intangible, currently known or that will be invented in the future are protected by copyright. These include:
- Books, leaflets, forms, correspondence, writing, speeches and discourses, lectures, forensic reports, chair speeches and any other work of the same nature.
- Musical compositions, with or without lyrics.
- Dramatic works, musicals, choreography, mime and, plays in general.
- Cinematographic works and any other audiovisual works.
- Sculptures; drawings, paintings, engravings, lithography; cartoons and comics; their preparatory work and sketches, and other plastic work, whether applied or not.
- Projects, drawings, models and designs of architectural and engineering works.
- Graphics, maps and designs relating to topography, geography and science in general.
- Photographic works and other procedures that are similar to photography.
- Computer software.
2. The title of a work will be protected as part of the work, provided that it is original.
Article 37. Reproduction, lending and consultation of works through specialised terminals in certain establishments.
1. Copyright holders cannot object to the reproduction of works, when this is a not-for-profit activity by museums, libraries, record libraries, film libraries, newspaper libraries, publicly-owned archives or archives that are part of cultural or scientific institutions and provided that the reproduction is solely made for research or conservation purposes.
2. Likewise, museums, archives, libraries, newspaper libraries, record libraries and film libraries that are either publicly owned or are part of not-for-profit organisations of general cultural, scientific or educational interest integrated in the Spanish educational system, shall not require the authorisation of the copyright holders for any loans made.

Furthermore, due to the uniqueness of the documents in the fond, consultation and reproduction will be determined by Constitutional Law 1/1982 of 5 May on the Protection of the Civil Right of Honour, Personal and Family Privacy and Self-image.
Article Four.
One. The exercise of the actions relating to the civil protection of the right to Honour, Privacy and Self-image of a deceased person corresponds to the person appointed for this purpose in the will. A legal person may be appointed for this purpose.
Two. Should there be no appointment or if the person named is deceased, then the spouse, descendants, ascendants and siblings of the person affected and who were living at the time of his/her death, shall have the right to seek protection.
Three. In the absence of all of these, the exercise of protection actions shall correspond to the Public Prosecutor, who may act ex-officio at the request of the person in question, provided that no more than eighty years have elapsed since the death of the person concerned. The same period of time shall be observed when the exercise of the aforementioned actions corresponds to a legal person appointed in the will.
Four. In the event of unlawful interference in the rights of the victims of a crime, as referred to in section eight of article seven, the party injured or offended by the offence committed shall have the right to exercise the protection actions, regardless of whether or not the said party brought the criminal or civil action in the preceding criminal proceedings. In any event, the Public Prosecutor will also be entitled to do so. In the event of death, the parties shall abide by the provisions of the sections above. (…)
Article seven.
The following shall be considered unlawful interference in the area of protection delimited in article two of this Law:

Three. The disclosure of facts relating to the private life of a person or family that affect its reputation and good name, as well as the disclosure or publication or the contents of letters, memoirs or other personal writing of an intimate nature.
Four. The disclosure of private details about a person or family, obtained through the professional or official activity of the person disclosing them. (…)
Seven. The accusation of deeds or showing value judgements through actions or expressions that, in any way, harm the dignity of the other person, by undermining his/her reputation or attacking his/her self esteem. (…)
Article eight.
One. In general, actions that are authorised or agreed by the competent Authority in accordance with the Law shall not be considered to be unlawful interference, or when a relevant historical, scientific or cultural interest is predominant.
